What sells early and what sells late in Los Angeles

Early trades (excavation and site work, site security, concrete, structural steel, elevator) need projects permitted recently, before the structure goes up. Late trades (cabinetry, flooring, countertop, finish carpentry, appliance and equipment) are bought from projects permitted a year or more ago that are only now reaching the finishes, so their counts lean on the older permits.

The broadest trade count in Los Angeles covers 1,011 new buildings and 2,143 renovations or alterations. Most open work is renovation and alteration, so owners, designers and renovation contractors decide as often as builders do.

What the Los Angeles data covers

The data is the City of Los Angeles: the building permits the Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) issues. Santa Monica, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Long Beach and the rest of Los Angeles County issue their own permits and are not in the feed today. The city's open dataset names no contractor, so Builtie reads each permit's LADBS record for the contractor and their CSLB license, the architect and the engineer. Many Los Angeles permits are owner-builder, and on those the architect is the first contact.

Customers who work from Santa Monica, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Torrance and the rest of Los Angeles County are shown this feed as their nearest covered market; those cities' own permits are not counted here.
