The ten trades with the most open projects in New York City, read October 9, 2026.

What sells early and what sells late in New York City

Early trades (excavation and site work, site security, concrete, structural steel, elevator) need projects permitted recently, before the structure goes up. Late trades (cabinetry, flooring, countertop, finish carpentry, appliance and equipment) are bought from projects permitted a year or more ago that are only now reaching the finishes, so their counts lean on the older permits.

The broadest trade count in New York City covers 7,290 new buildings and 19,425 renovations or alterations. Most open work is renovation and alteration, so owners, designers and renovation contractors decide as often as builders do.

What the New York City data covers

All five boroughs are in the feed, which has run since February 27, 2026. New York issues separate permits for each trade, so the firm named on a permit is often the trade contractor, an engineer or an expediter rather than the developer. Builtie groups the permits into projects and resolves the owner and builder separately.

Customers who work from Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, Yonkers and Long Island are shown this feed as their nearest covered market; those cities' own permits are not counted here.
